Despite the challenges we've all experienced this year, our belief that world class art is timeless remains unshaken, and we have come to more fully appreciate our magnificent collection. The Jonathan Club’s stable continuity in a world that changes so quickly makes this possible, and the Jonathan Art Foundation in its quiet way ensures that our collection is protected, preserved, and beautifully presented. We also use our knowledge, relationships and judgement to improve and strengthen the collection in ways that enhance our facilities in downtown and at the beach in Santa Monica. It’s gratifying that many of us are already enjoying them carefully once again.
JAF Invites You to Join the 2021 Circles of Support!
JAF is proud to announce its latest acquisition, Poppies and Lupines, (1912) by John Marshall Gamble (1863-1957). Gamble was a giant among the early California Impressionists, and adding this artist to our collection is an important step toward establishing one of the finest plein air collections on the West Coast. This purchase would not have been accomplished without major contributions from friends of the Jonathan Art Foundation.
This year the Jonathan Club kindly lent one of its most treasured paintings from its collection, California Landscape--Oaks and Meadow, to the exhibition "Granville Redmond: The Eloquent Palette" at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. The show has since traveled to the Laguna Art Museum, where it is currently on display through November 15.
This painting was exhibited in the highly selective Louisiana Purchase exhibition at St. Louis in 1904. The following year the Club, under the leadership of then-president Henry Huntington, purchased the painting--quite likely from the artist himself.

The Jonathan Art Foundation extended is appreciation to its members of the 2020 Circles of Support, whose contributions allow us to continue our mission to care for and exhibit wonderful works of California art, and preserve this historical perspective of California's influential role in American Impressionism.
Circles members get treated to exclusive tours of elite private collections an exhibitions, art & wine events, and other interesting speakers and venues.
