This season, the Jonathan Art Foundation invites you to step beyond the printed page and into the fantastic, imaginary world of one of the 20th century’s most iconic artistic talents. The JAF are thrilled to announce that their upcoming Gala will feature a special, limited engagement exhibition: The Cat Behind the Hat!
For over 60 years, Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known to the world as Dr. Seuss) captivated millions with his whimsical illustrations and rhyme. Yet, his artistic genius extended far beyond his beloved children’s books. For decades, Geisel painted and sculpted for his own personal pleasure, creating a “Secret Art Collection” that was virtually unknown to the general public during his lifetime.

At this year’s Gala, the Jonathan Art Foundation will share a compelling selection of these rare artworks. Guests will have the exclusive opportunity to explore and acquire works from The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection. This exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into Geisel’s unique vision, ranging from his best-known book illustrations to a personal collection, a mind-expanding collection, which he would work on at night.
Perhaps the most delightful surprise of the evening will be the inclusion of Dr. Seuss’s “Unorthodox Taxidermy.“ This series of three-dimensional sculptures features wackily named creatures like the Carbonic Walrus, the Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and the Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast.

The theme of the evening, The Cat Behind the Hat, pays homage to Geisel’s enduring connection to felines. From the “cat bystander” in his early advertisements to the protagonist in his secret paintings, cats hinted at his adventures, his reclusive nature, and the childlike humor that infused his life.
This exhibition is historically significant. Despite unprecedented demand, no limited-edition artworks were authorized during Geisel’s lifetime. It was not until 1997, six years after his death, that his widow, Audrey Geisel, began the project to fulfill his wishes. As she noted in her preface to The Cat Behind the Hat, “I’m gratified to carry out Ted’s wishes and have these works revealed to the world.”
Join us on Saturday, April 11 for an evening of art, nostalgia, and wonder as we celebrate the genius of Dr. Seuss. Proceeds of the Gala go to benefit the Jonathan Art Foundation and its mission to support preservation. Details will also be coming soon for the JAF Auction that will occur from March 29 – April 19.
